Star Trek: Starfleet Command is a real-time space combat game that allows the player to represent any one of six empires.
Choices include the United Federation of Planets, Klingon Empire, Hydran Kingdom, Lyran Star Empire, Gorn Federation or
Romulan Star Empire.
Based on data from Quicksilver Software's Star Fleet Battles board game, Star Trek: Starfleet Command features more than 50
campaign missions, four classes of ships and more than 50 3D hull designs with 300-plus variations. The game offers multiple
tutorials as well as multi-player options ranging from two-player modem or serial cable (including deathmatch battles) to up to six
players via LAN or the Internet.
The player can achieve in-game promotions from the level of Lieutenant Commander to Rear Admiral and increased task force
control commensurate with the promotions. Battle craft range from frigate to heavy cruiser and dreadnought ships. Through this
promotional system of gameplay, newer and more powerful ships are made available as advancement in rank occurs. Original
Star Trek scenarios can be played out as well.
Action in Star Trek: Starfleet Command is at the tactical level and includes literally dozens of options and capabilities found in the
original Star Fleet Battles. A wide range of diverse elements ranges from suicide shuttles and photon torpedoes to fusion beams,
cloaking devices and monsters. Damage control, move and turn (in battle) cost rates, defensive maneuvers and five types of
phaser fire are but a few of the game elements
